How To: Glass Finish

STEP 1

Planning

Before you start

 

You will need:

  1. Feast Watson Glass Finish Kit (includes a broad, flat stirrer)
  2. Feast Watson Proofseal (or a suitable sealer)
  3. One or more disposable mixing containers (sufficient to contain total mixed volume)
  4. Masking tape
  5. A spreader or a disposable paint brush
  6. Aluminium foil, plastic sheeting or wax paper (to place underneath your work to catch any drips or spills)
  7. Suitable protective clothing, safety gloves, eye/face protection
  8. A propane/butane torch (for de-gassing)
  9. Epoxy thinner (for clean up).

STEP 2

Preparation

Work area:

  1. Check the temperature levels in the  workroom. For best results, room temperature should be >20°C.
  2. It is best to work in an area that has low humidity (less than 60%)
  3. Ensure that the area in which you work is as dust and lint free as possible
  4. Clean surface to be coated. Ensure it is dry and free from dust, grease, wax and oil. 

 

Sealing:

  1. For best results, seal surface before applying Glass Finish.
  2. Apply two coats of a suitable sealer, such as Feast Watson Proofseal, as per label instructions. Do not sand between coats or after sealing.
  3. Allow surface to dry fully, then fill knots and cracks with an appropriate filler. (For best results, use a dark filler as this will look more natural
  4. Be careful not to touch the sealed surfaces with your fingers, as oil from your skin may contaminate the surface.

 

General:

  1. Use tape to mask off (cover) areas of the project you do not wish to coat.
  2. Elevate the surface to be coated (if necessary) from the work area about 5cm to allow the coating to drip freely from the sides.
  3. Place aluminium foil, plastic sheeting or wax paper underneath the item to catch drips.

STEP 3

Application

STEP 1: Combine

Combine, in the same clean container, Glass Finish RESIN (Part A) and Glass Finish HARDENER (Part B).

 

STEP 2: Mix

Mix with the flat stirrer provided until the material is thoroughly blended

 

STEP 3: Pour & Spread

  1. Pour Glass Finish over the surface to be coated.
  2. Spread evenly with a brush or spreader.
  3. For best results, always pour a ‘border’ of Glass Finish (approximately 3cm from the outer edge of the area to be coated or the masked off area) and then fill in the area in the middle with a generous amount of Glass Finish

 

STEP 4: De-Gass

  1. Bubbles will appear in the coating after the pour. Some of these will pop as Glass Finish is spread across surface
  2. Use a propane torch to fully remove air bubbles from the freshly coated surface.
  3. Sweep the area with the torch from 20 cm above surface until bubbles disappear. Use a low flame. Do not hold torch in one area for too long or hold too close to the surface as the flame may scorch the surface and ruin your project.

 

 

STEP 5: Leave to cure

For best results, leave the product to cure for at least 24 hours in a dust free environment. Full curing of this product is achieved after seven days.
