Crackle Lacquer
Distressed Vintage Look
Crackle Lacquer is a specialty finish that gives interior timber furniture and accesssories a distressed, vintage look.
Crackle Lacquer is a two-step system. Crackle Lacquer Base Coat must be followed by Crackle Lacquer Top Coat. Crackle Lacquer Base Coat has been specially formulated to activate the top coat to crackle as it dries.
Crackle Lacquer Top Coat is available in a white base, which can be tinted to many colours.
Crackle Lacquer is NOT recommended for high wear situations or wet areas. Crackle Lacquer is NOT suitable as a floor paint.
Note: Crackle Lacquer is a reactive process. Individuals results will vary due to film thickness, application method, ambient temperatures and substrate.
surface preparation
New or bare timber
Sand to a smooth surface and remove all sanding dust before coating. For best results, seal oily or porouse timber with Feast Waston Proofseal and allow to dry thoroughly before applying Crackle Lacquer Base Coat.
Previously coated surfaces
Lightly sand previously coated surfaces. Remove all sanding dust before coating
Proofseal
Application
Crackle Lacquer is a 2 step system. Crackle Lacquer Base Coat MUST be followed by Crackle Lacquer Top Coat.
Step 1: Base Coat
Crackle Lacquer Base Coat should be stirred thoroughly before application with a flat blade stirrer taking care not to introduce bubbles.
Apply 2-3 generous coats of Crackle Lacquer Base Coat using a brush, roller or applicator. Take care not to spread too thinly. If applying by roller, use a medium nap (10-12mm) synthetic roller. Do not spray. Allow 2 hours dry time between coats.
If applying over a previous varnish coating, 2 coats will be sufficient. For new timber, apply a minimum of 3 coats.
Allow the final coat of Crackle Lacquer Base Coat to dry fully before applying Crackle Lacquer Top Coat as per label instructions
Step 2: Top Coat
Crackle Lacquer Top Coat should be stirred thoroughly before application with a flat blade stirrer taking care not to introduce bubbles.
For best results apply1 generous coat of Crackle Lacquer Top Coat with a brush, using a standard brush stroke action.
Take care not to spread too thinly. Do NOT spray. Make sure to cover the entire surface with a single coat as touch ups once dry will ruin the effect. Do NOT apply a second coat of Crackle Lacquer Top Coat, as this will not increase cracking and will ruin the effect.
STAINING
To change the colour visible through the crackled finish (underneath the effect) apply feast Watson Prooftint following label directions prior to the application of Crackle Lacquer Base Coat. Allow Prooftint to dry the recommended period before applying Crackle Lacquer Base Coat.
Maintenance
Allow Crackle Lacquer to dry fully before handling. After 7 days Crackle Lacquer can be wiped down lightly with a dry cloth or a feather duster. If required, clean sparingly with water or a mild detergent
Due to the nature of the effect, Crackle Lacquer will wear with handling. We recommend finishing with 1 coat of Crackle Lacquer Base Coat over the top of the dry Crackle Lacquer Top Coat to prolong the life of the coating. Note: The protective clear will increase sheen level and may change the look of the final finish
