Tips to Use Wood Stain & Varnish for a modern looking headboard
Customise the space you spend a third of your life in when you refresh your timber headboard. To best accomplish this, use Feast Watson’s Stain & Varnish to get your timber headboard looking fresh and modern.
The wood stain and varnish combines a professional clear polyurethane for one-step timber colour and protection and durable clear finish.
Preparing your timber headboard for coating
- Move your headboard to a suitable workspace
- Sand back surface until smooth and bare
- Clean off the surface from dust or sanding residue to prime your headboard for coating
TIP: To get an especially smooth finish, apply a coat of Feast Watson’s Sanding Sealer. Be sure to read the instructions and then leave it to dry before you stain.
How to add robust colour and protection
- Mix Feast Watson’s Stain & Varnish well. Avoid incorporating any bubbles into the product.
- With a paintbrush or short nap roller (5mm), apply the product to the headboard, making sure to work along the grain.
- Once the whole surface is stained, let it dry for 12 hours. Be sure to stain the headboard’s sides as well.
- Once dried, lightly sand before applying another coat. Be sure to clean the surface before applying that second coat.
- Be sure to follow the 3-coat system by applying three coats of product, starting with Stain & Varnish. If you are satisfied with the colour after only 1 or 2 coats, you can use Feast Watson’s Clear Varnish for the remaining coats. For example, if you love the colour after only 1 coat of wood stain & varnish, you will still need to apply 2 coats of Clear Varnish. This system ensures your timber is well protected.
- Let the product dry completely which will take 8 hours.
- Enjoy the fruits of your labour.
TIP: Feast Watson products will look different depending on the timber it’s applied on. To avoid being stuck with a colour you dislike, test it on an offcut of the timber you’re about to coat.
