How to Upcycle Varnished Wooden Furniture - A Buffet Cabinet

Upcycling wooden furniture into a designer showpiece is the bread and butter of these two DIY pros, Jess, and Izzie. And don’t think Jess and Izzie are limited to furniture - from laundry benches to smoothie stations, you might think they could renew anything.

Originally found on an online marketplace, Jess and Izzie are going to try and create a modern, Scandi-style buffet from an old wooden cabinet. Let’s find out how they did it.

A blank canvas to start with

The girls are looking to make big changes, so they began by stripping the cabinet bare to reveal a blank canvas, making sure to sand every surface and remove the damaged top.

Upgraded doors for the buffet unit

The DIY duo used strips of Porta Timber dowel to create a clad effect on the front doors. Using nail glue, they fixed this onto the original timber using nail glue, keeping it in place until it dried with tape. After finishing it off with some filler and sanding that smooth, the doors were primed to be painted.

Some add-ons for the complete designer look!

Jess didn’t want to limit herself to the cabinet’s framework and so she decided to add a new top and some exterior shelves. Izzie wanted to give these new additions rounded edges, so she traced around a plate before using a jigsaw to cut along the stencil.

For added security, the two installed the shelves using pre-drilled holes, levels, screws, and nail glue.

Staining time with Feast Watson Stain & Varnish

Jess and Izzie’s go-to wood finish to get that coastal look is Feast Watson’s Stain & Varnish Liming White, which they used for the doors, interior selves, and the new add-ons. Add in a couple of styling items and a beautiful new feature for their home was born.
