How to prepare your deck:

New Timber

Allow your new timber to weather for 4-6 weeks before applying.
Ensure your deck is clean and ready to go with Feast Watson Woodclean.
Sand the surface lightly to remove any raised grain for the best results for your deck. And remember, remove any leftover dust before coating!

Weathering Timber

Ensure your deck is clean and ready to go with Feast Watson Woodclean.
For best results, sand your timber slightly to remove any deteriorations. Make sure to remove all leftover sand before coating!

Previously Coated Timber

If your deck already has a stain or oil, don't worry. Check if your surface is ready by sprinkling water onto your deck:

If the water absorbs into the timber - you're good to go!
If the water beads, you will need to let your deck further weather, or if you don't want to wait, you can either sand or strip your deck back to bare timber.

Painted or Varnished Timber

Before coating, you must bring your timber back to bare timber by stripping or sanding your deck.
Make sure to remove all sanding dust before coating!

How to apply Traditional Timber Oil:

Before you get started, you need to ensure the following:

You have followed our preparation guide
Your timber is completely dry before coating.
You've stirred your Traditional Timber Oil thoroughly before starting (and during!), avoiding introducing any bubbles!
If you are coating a large space and need more than one Traditional Timber Oil, you’ve mixed both cans together in a large container.

Ok, let's get started:

Work 3-4 boards at a time along the grain and apply one coat of Traditional Timber Oil using a brush, roller, spray, or Feast Watson Floor Applicator.

Using a roller or spray? Make sure to back brush the coating. This way you will ensure even penetration.
Note: Ensure your edges and end grain are fully coated!

Let the oil penetrate into your timber for 30-60 minutes, and then wipe off any excess product with a dry applicator or cloth before your timber becomes tacky.
Let your timber dry for another 60 minutes.
Apply a second coat. After 30-60 minutes, wipe off any excess product.

Note: Wiping off the excess product is an important step to gaining that beautiful finish!

If you want a longer-lasting finish, apply a third coat, and follow the previous steps.

You can start walking on your beautiful new deck after 18 hours of drying time.

How to maintain your deck using Traditional Timber Oil?

Regularly check on the coated timber to look for any colour loss, dryness, or weathering. If this occurs, recoat the timber and it will return to its original beauty.
If you recoat, don’t forget to clean your deck first using Woodclean!
